About the Board
This Board is the hearing body for Brighton tax payers who file grievances regarding the assessment value placed on their property. After hearing the grievance through the formal hearing process, the Board of Assessment Review (BAR) has the authority to change the assessed value to a number that they feel is fair, that is not lower than what you requested and not higher than the current assessed value.
Members of the BAR are appointed by the Town Board and consists of residents who have at least a general knowledge of property values in the community and do not include the Assessor or staff from the Assessor's Office.
Assessment grievance/complaint applications are available in the Assessor's Office (RP-524 & Instructions) on May 1st of each year and appointments to appear before the BAR (which meets on the 4th Tuesday of each May), are made as completed forms are returned to the Assessor's Office so early filing is encouraged.
Formal BAR reviews are conducted annually on the 4th Tuesday in May at the Brighton Town Hall.
